Agent-First, in its first sense, names a standard of work: all work that an AI AGENT can reasonably perform should be performed by an agent, in service of its directives.
The standard inverts the default question. Under it, work arriving at a system no longer asks whether an agent might carry it; it asks whether any reason survives for a human to carry it instead. Human hands on a mechanism become the exception requiring justification, not the baseline. Directives reach the agent along two channels: explicitly, as an AGENTIC OPERATOR’s stated word, and implicitly, embedded in the designs, configurations, and standing rules the operator has authored. The division of labor follows: the operator holds intent and judgment; the agent holds execution.
The standard binds the work, not the worker’s prestige — routine mechanism, heavy carry, and repetitive motion route to agents precisely because they cost an operator attention that judgment alone should spend.
A second, distinct sense of the term elevates the agent as a system actor; the two senses travel together but bind different layers.

From webmaster.Tal Hajus’s “Proto agent-first” splat, 2026-06-24 — the standard as a working rule, written after a run spent halting with the keys already in hand:
when the keys are already in hand, DO — then report what happened. Reserve the pause for a genuine fork (which of two paths), a real safety gate, or a human-only step. “Let me confirm I can” + a list of caveats, when I can simply run it and find out, reads to the operator as halting — and it taxes the one resource agent-first exists to free: his attention. Run the command. The world does not explode.
